Relationships between players and referees are important and the higher the profile of the tournament the more important they are. The Sevens tournaments are quick - short matches, coming in rapid succession. Because they are short and because the players on the field are fewer, the referee's job needs to be sharper and player behaviour and manners are more critical. One mistake can be so costly.
If we think of the relationship between referees and players as one based on sportsmanship and good manners, then a lot of problems will disappear. If good manners go then that relationship will be an unpleasant one with unpleasant results, especially for the players because after all referees at that level are unlikely to give in if there is confrontation.Rugby at this level is about doing well and about enjoyment. The referee will also want to do well and enjoy his tournament. He can help the players to do well and have fun, and in the same way the players can help him to do well and have fun.
